Lives of Soldiers
Civil war soldiers were likely young men from farms looking for money or adventure. However that was not what they got. Many soldiers were just common men without any military experience or training what so ever. Because if this, they would have to go through extensive training and drilling. On the battlefield was worse, these ordinary men who were now given the title of "soldier" had to trust their commanding officer's orders, often running forward into the battlefield, right into the line of fire of the enemy. Even when soldiers are not in battle, conditions were still dangerous. Disease was spreading everywhere, and the risk of getting sick was ever more evident, viruses like malaria, pneumonia, whooping cough, scarlet fever, mumps, and whooping cough was very common. Civil war camps were not known for its luxury. conditions were often cramped, and hygiene was virtually non-existent, the ground would quickly become filthy and muddy after thousands upon thousands of soldiers were walking around on it.
