The Emancipation ProclamationThe Emancipation Proclamation was Lincoln's plan to abolish slavery for once and for all in one fell swoop. Written by Abraham Lincoln January 1st 1863, the proclamation freed all slaves in the rebelling slaves and allowed them to join the union's military force. This affected the war in two ways, number one, it completely changed the meaning of the war. At first the Union's goal was to preserve the union and to prevent the Confederation from becoming a independent nation, but now, with the proclamation, the new goal for the union is to abolish slavery. The second way that the proclamation affected the war is that it added african americans to the war force. These african americans placed into a battalion separate from whites in fear of them not being accepted properly. However, these black battalions fought better than most other battalions.
ReconstructionIn the end, the Union did win and slavery was finally purged from America, but the war left the confederate lands in ruins. The union did a lot to aid the south in rebuilding, they helped rebuild roads, got farms back into working order, and built proprietary schools for poor and black children. Many northerners flooded to the south to help rebuild everything, they did this in hopes of making some money, and this annoyed many southerners.
Lincoln was overall lenient towards the southerners after the war, even though many northern citizens believed that the south should be receiving much harsher laws. After Lincoln was shot, Andrew Johnson took over, being a southerner himself, he was even more lenient than lincoln, this enraged the north, including the Congress, who started putting harsher laws upon southern states. Here are the effects of the civil war The biggest effect of the civil war is slavery being banished across the lands, African Americans also all became citizens of the United States Another effect was the destruction of the southern economy -since the confederacy rejoined the union, this left all confederate currency worthless. Lastly, the states were reunited and the southern states were no longer allowed to secede from the union. Some amendments were made to the constitution 13th amendment -Outlawed slavery 14th amendment -Black people were citizens in the U.S. and that all people were protected equally by law 15th amendment -Gave voting rights to blacks |
